MEET PAYTON HERNANDEZ, CLASS OF 2027
Tell us about yourself. How did you first get into soccer?
I am currently a junior in high school at Immaculate High School in Danbury, CT. My dad is a huge soccer fan and when I was around four, I asked him to show me how to play. He has been teaching me ever since. He coached me in the travel league and is also my assistant coach in high school.
ACCESS U’s College Pathway program is personalized for each student-athlete. What support have you received so far?
I first connected with ACCESS U in 2024. I have access to SAT prep, which I really needed and was not affordable otherwise. I also have access to tutoring and help with recruitment.
What are your goals for college, both on the field and beyond soccer?
My goal is to get into a good school with a great soccer program. I hope to work in pediatric nursing, so I want to study nursing or health sciences. Although I want to play at the highest level, I think a D2 or D3 school would be better suited for me. Some colleges I am interested in are Florida Southern College, Saint John Fisher, Colorado State Pueblo, Randolph Macon, USCB, and Jefferson. I am open to finding the best fit in the upcoming months.
What is a challenge you have faced as a student-athlete?
My biggest challenge as a student-athlete has been the college recruitment process. I definitely want to play in college, but finding a school that meets your academic needs, the price that's affordable and has a coach and team that are a good fit for both you and the coach is way more complicated than I thought it would be. Competition is high. It is more difficult to get noticed and very expensive to attend ID camps and try to stand out.
What is one of the biggest opportunities you have had as a student-athlete, and how has it helped shape your development or future goals?
I have had so many amazing opportunities playing soccer and getting to meet the most amazing people. I traveled to Italy and Spain on scholarship to play soccer and I got to meet amazing players such as Abby Wambach and Alyssa Naeher. The biggest thing that I have gotten out of playing soccer has been connection to the world, communication, and building relationships. I am still friends with everyone I have met through soccer and the common passion of the sport makes our friendships stronger. This quality is going to make me a better nurse and a better person.
